Fall Fashion List 2024

Fall Fashion List 2024

What are y’all into for fall?

I haven’t been paying close attention to the predicted trends. Around these parts, high schoolers and college students are still wearing light wash cargo jeans with white sneakers, but I’m convinced they’re about to fall out of the trend cycle.

I’ve also been ignoring any color palette predictions. Though the algorithm fed me a nail polish ad, and it looks like browns, maroons, and creamy neutrals are in. To paraphrase Miranda Priestly: “Fall colors for fall? Groundbreaking.”

I feel like I’m constantly reassessing my wardrobe. Still not sure how to balance clergy wear and business casual with my personal style. I’m also beginning to realize that some of the silhouettes that used to work for me either don’t pair well with a clergy shirt or just don’t suit my curvier body.

For example, I used to think I had a long torso, but now I realize I am actually pretty short waisted for my height, albeit with a longer “rise.” Even when I can find high waisted pants that suit my proportions, they cut me off in a way I don’t like. I like my body overall, but a lot of modern, boxy styles don’t do a good job of highlighting my proportions. And more bodycon styles don’t really make sense for my work context.

Because of that, I am really digging mid-rise barrel and balloon styles. It can be hard to get the right fit on the first try-on, but I just got a pair of American Eagle Barrel jeans that fit great and are super comfortable. I also stand by my recent post about jeans for mid-size bodies.

Anyways, it is something of a tradition on StyleWise to share my fall favorites, including styles, silhouettes, and color stories. This year in particular, I think it will be reassuring to spend some time really thinking about what I actually like and feel confident wearing.

Here’s what I’m into this season:

Clothing Colors: dark coral, mauve-brown, navy, sapphire, baby(ish) blue, emerald, tan/dark khaki, golden yellow, faded indigo

Styles: cropped sweaters, seamed and ribbed t-shirts, barrel jeans, pleated pants, mid-rise pants, rayon midi skirts, body skimming dresses, layered spaghetti strap dresses

Aesthetics: 90s floral and subtle menswear, ballet-core, New England

Patterns: gingham/checkerboard/plaid, black and white stripes, paisley, neutral/monotone florals

Accessories: mid-tone/caramel leather bags, clogs, red mary janes, mules, 70s-80s-inspired glasses

Here’s what I’m avoiding or putting in storage this season: lavender, hot pink, slim leg jeans and pants, ultra-high waist pants, a-line and skater skirts, frilly/boho dresses, chunky shoes

If you compare these preferences to past seasons, the only significant updates are in the styles and silhouettes. I tend to stick to colors I know I look good in, which are jewel tones and some high saturation pastels. But I am trying to play with silhouette, especially the style and fit of pants.
