Spring is in the air?
Due to super weird weather in Austin over the past several weeks, it doesn’t look like we’re going to have a good wildflower season. This region is known for its bluebonnets that turn every hillside, easement, and highway median into a wash of violet “blue” in March and April. This time last year, when we moved to Austin, everything was covered in them. But this year, I’ve only seen one little patch. There is also a wildfire raging not too far from here, brought by dangerously low humidity and strong winds.
Despite the strangeness of this season, the world still turns. The lengthening days are signaling spring. And so are all the targeted ads.
I already had a few regrettable buys this season that I swiftly returned, including the much-lauded Gap barrel jeans that really didn’t fit me right. It seems that barrel jeans are likely to reach their peak in the first half of 2025. They’re so saturated in brand collections that they’re almost guaranteed to be out by the fall. I have one pair of horseshoe jeans from Gap that I really like and that’s enough to satisfy the trend.
Buffy Inspired
Daniel and I have been rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I have always loved the fashion. But this time, it’s really Buffy and Willow’s wardrobes in the first and second season that are calling to me.
Buffy’s style is a bit too high femme for my taste, but I love the full-length, barely-bootcut pants she wears, especially when paired with slim boots or strappy sandals. Willow has an enviable collection of Adidas sneakers, and I love her colorful striped sweaters and tops. She dresses very similarly to how I dressed in that era, and not too far off from how I dress now.
I have had amazing luck thrifting lately. We took a trip to Dallas last month and I finally found a heck of a deal on Justin Roper boots ($35!). I also got an asymmetric top, a brown mockneck top, and some other things. Last week, I found 3 pairs of long length pants from Gloria Vanderbilt. It’s a lower end department store brand, but the fit is great for me. For anything else on my list, I’ll try to thrift first.

Here’s what I’m into this season:
Colors: cornflower/”baby” blue, navy, soft emerald, dark brown
Styles: straight-fit, full-length jeans, asymmetry, chiffon skirts, rib knit tees and tank tops, v-line waists, colorful (non-blue) denim
Aesthetics: late 90s, nod to Y2K
Patterns: gingham (always), stripes, pinstripe, color wash and monotone
Accessories: square toe shoes, tabi shoes, leather Baggu, cat eye and wire frame glasses
Makeup: super minimalist and dewy, coral blush
All in all, not a lot has changed in my preferences since the fall. That’s what I like to see: consistency. It means I’m not straying too far from my core taste and color palette.

Loved this!! Your take on spring style feels so grounded and your vibe. I’ve been into some similar pieces lately, especially stripes and full-length pants. I’ve also been trying to be more mindful about what I bring into my closet. I have a couple of basics from Urthwear that I really like. It’s organic and has toxin-free materials, which feels like a nice balance to the fun of seasonal style!
